Find a late summer Italian holiday…

Autumn sun escapes

Millions of tourist visit Italy each year, especially during the peak season from June-Aug, including Italians who staycation during the month of August.  From the month of September onwards, the country takes on a new picture with fewer tourists and the beaches, lakes, restaurants and importantly the roads are far less congested.

This is the perfect time to visit Italy with a far greater choice of accommodation and much more reasonable pricing – you will find that villa in Italy or Italian apartments for a fraction of the price!
In terms of temperatures, the north of Italy and central Italy will still offer good weather at the beginning and most of September.  During October, it’s better to head south down to Sicily, Amalfi Coast and Puglia.

Here’s our round up of destinations for autumn sun with a link to our accommodation in Italy:

Lake Garda – We love the lakes, especially magnificent Garda which enjoys a true Mediterranean climate.  This makes it perfect for an autumn getaway.  The lake and mountain views, wonderful restaurants, wide choice of shops and activities, makes it a great holiday destination.

There are plenty of fabulous lakeside promenades perfect for strolling, on the lake itself you can take a boat between most of the resorts or to one of the islands to look at the beautiful villas or gardens. For the more energetic, you can rent bikes easily and you are spoilt for choice in terms of watersports. Villas in Lake Garda offer fantastic views of the lake and offer terraces, which are perfect for soaking up that autumn sun.

Sardinia - Sardinia is the perfect place to visit in September and early October.  The island quietens down after the August rush of visitors leaving beautiful large and quiet beaches with endless soft and golden beaches and crystal blue sea.  This time of year really exposes its beauty and highlights its unspoilt and rugged landscape.

The island offers a wide range of attractions, from quiet coves and beaches to nature reserves and mountaintop ruins very diverse considering its size. Inland, the countryside is rich with agriculture and the landscape includes ravines, crags, valleys and wooded hillsides.  It’s easy to find a luxury villa Sardinia for a fraction of the price from mid-September onwards.

Liguria - offers something for everyone and the sun on the Italian Riviera often shines all year long.  For temperatures in the mid 20’s, September and early October is a great time to visit – it’s obviously cooler in the mornings and evenings and becomes a little more unsettled but this adds even more drama to the beautiful landscape.

This region offers one of the steepest and dramatic coastlines in Italy and unlike some more rural destinations, Liguria is lively and cosmopolitan all-year round.  From Cinque Terre accommodation to properties in Rapallo, there is a wide choice of places to stay.

Amalfi Coast - is one of the most inspiring and surprising stretches of the Mediterranean coastline. No journey here is dull; this is an imposing rock garden with breathtaking cliffs and deep ravines with a coastal road offering exceptional views. This part of Italy, benefits from a long golden autumn and as you would expect is one of the most expensive destinations to visit in Italy.

Visiting outside of peak season will bring lots of benefits to the potential holidaymaker.  Prices for a start are significantly lower and can range from 25% to 50% less than high season and you can normally cherry pick your choice of self-catering villa or apartment with ease.  From villas in Sorrento to Positano accommodation, there are plenty of quaint and relaxing properties to choose from.

Puglia – travelling down to the south of Italy will bring you great temperatures in the autumn.  This region is a diverse region with a perfect blend of rustic landscapes and kilometres of pristine coastline and has some of the cleanest beaches in Italy.

The region’s raft of whitewashed towns and villages are a delight to explore out of high season and expect to still see life in the piazzas bars, restaurants, especially on the weekends.

Try a villa in Taormina or apartments in Trapani for that perfect out of season stay. The milder autumn temperatures make sightseeing among far more pleasant and the beaches are far less crowded.
